'A Day In The Life'

While thinking about the book 'An American Family, 3 Decades with the McGarveys' that my friend Mark Hamilton suggested that I read I shot this picture of Vanessa and Megan just hanging out at there apartment. I also thought about my upcoming assignments as a news photographer for a local newspaper. Do not change a thing, let the room help tell the story, and do not pose the subjects even though Megan poses when ever I put my camera to my eye.

There is a great deal of discussion in the club about learning to do more in black and white. In the book Mark suggested the McGarveys felt that the photographer was not very good since she shoots in black and white. I thought this was interesting since I think black and white is a challenge. You really only have contrast to adjust. It is all about tonal ranges, composition and subject matter.

There is a lot wrong with this shot. Shotting directly into a big window becomes a big white spot that pulls you away from the subject. It is a wonderful source of light but never really works in the picture. Also Vanessa is engrossed in chating on Facebook and you can almost not find her in the shot.

So what do you think?

'April'

April and I visited one of her favorite spots while I was on vacation in Orlando. This shot was taken at the 'The Wine Room in Winter Park, Florida'

I seen more different types of wine here than I think I have seen in my entire life. The way it works is you purchase a wine card and put some money on it. Then you walk around and the different types of wine are kept in refrigerated dispensers. You put your card in above the dispenser and press the button on the wine you wish to sample. Each button has 3 settings. 1oz, 4oz, 8oz. Most cost around $2.50 for 1oz, $4,00 for 4oz, and around $5.50 a glass (8 ounces). So you just walk around sampling wine at your leisure. What a way to spend the afternoon.

I shot this image using my new Hot Shoe mini-soft box that fits in front of the hot shoe light mounted on top of my camera. It gives a wonderful soft light while almost completely eliminating the hot spots of a flash. I also like how it lights up April while not hitting the background.

I used ISO 1600 to pick up detail in the background. The room did not have a lot of light. I also had to slow down the shutter to 1/6 of a second and set the flash to behind the curtain to free the subject.

What do you think?

This is an image of my dauther April looking at the list of names of the first class passangers of the Titantic that were lost at sea. I think this is a very powerful image and will also make it to my masters collection. What do you think?

The Red Handkerchief

I never thougth on the camera pop up flash could actually help produce a nice image. I alwasy considered it a desperate device but one that you have with you. Most of the time the reflections it produces or the red eye require a lot of work to make the image acceptable. This time it was perfect. The shot was created at the Titantic Expereince in Orlando Florida. I think this is going to be in my masters collection. Let me know what you think. Your feelings when you look at the image. What does it say to you?
